About the game

Word Game Hero is a puzzle game inspired by Wordle, Lingo, Jotto and more.

Features

  • Guess the word in 6 tries, using wit and your clues to build a streak
  • SharePlay lets you play co-op with friends on FaceTime
  • Share a link to a specific puzzle to a friend
  • 4 and 5 letter words available immediately, and winning games with these words unlocks 6 and 7 letter word difficulties.
  • Dictionary of puzzle answers can show you the definition for words that you don't guess to learn as you play

Pricing / business model

  • One time $4.99 USD IAP (works with Family Sharing) to unlock all features:
    • Remove ads
    • Unlimited games daily instead of 10
    • If one person on a FaceTime call has unlimited then all players can continue playing unlimited games over SharePlay
  • 5 day free trial automatically on downloading
    • There is no IAP screen immediately but it is always visible prominently in Settings in case you are convinced and want to purchase before the 5 days is up.
  • No way to purchase clues.
    • Keeps the playing field level.
  • Free users can always play 10 games a day
  • Ads are for other iOS apps only at this time, use Apple's native framework for presenting app recommendations, and do not track or cross reference the user in any way.

  • There are over 10 additional icons to unlock available for Unlimited users to unlock from a code guessing screen!

Ads

  • I am using Not Evil Ads, which is my own privacy friendly ad platform that I'm working on. The ads are privacy friendly in that they are not correlated or cross referenced with your activity anywhere else at all, they work like say a podcast ad does where a business will pay for placement, and then use a referral code i.e 99designs.com/wordgamehero
  • The eventual goal is for a very similar UI/UX but with paid promotions, say Grammarly might be a good fit for sponsorship in Word Game Hero for example.
  • At this stage of development they are basically a list of apps I am choosing to promote, my own and some other developer friends and only in my apps currently. As well as using the native Apple UI for promoting an application these only show up once every 12 hours rather than being a permanent banner or similar. Pretty much all these decisions come down to me as a developer building an experience that me as a privacy conscious user would have no complaints about.

About the developer

Hi, I'm Jake Nelson. I'm an indie software and now game developer from Western Australia, currently living and working in the United Kingdom.

I graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 2018, and have been working in the field since. I wanted to make iOS apps and wasn't doing that in my day job, so I started learning iOS and Swift/SwiftUI development online as it hadn't been taught at university. I previously tried to learn iOS development and always got stuck at programmatic UI and storyboards not clicking, but when SwiftUI was announced it was immediately more approachable and I dived into it. With the help of the awesome online iOS and tech communities, specifically free resources like hackingwithswift.com, donnywals.com and avanderlee.com and too many more to list.

I left my previous job at the beginning of 2021 to pursue indie app development full time with the support of my partner. At the end of 2021 we moved to the UK and have since continued on to sunny Texas.

When I'm not working on this, I'll be working on my other iOS projects, watching basketball or exploring Texas with my partner.
